So, you are ready to paint your house. You have a contract with a reliable painting company, and you provided your colors as it was requested before the project started. You can’t wait until your house is freshly painted with the colors you chose. The painting team arrives at your house, you are excited for a great start, you greet them and go to do your daily activities and the crew starts prepping and painting the first few rooms in the house.
You were busy working hard all day and at the end of the day, you go and look at the progress when the team is gone. Sadly, you realize that the colors you picked for the walls were just not the right ones for you. You call the painting company just to check if the paint colors were purchased correctly, you also ask if 2 coats were applied as per agreement, and just to double check you asked if the company purchased the paint with the correct paint brand you love, where you selected your colors.
All this to find out that your paint selection instructions were followed correctly and the new colors you now have on the walls are the colors you chose. Now, what? But most importantly why? It is important to think what to do, obviously to ask for an additional quote to repaint the walls with colors you really like, or to conform and get used the new colors that you are not very happy with. Could this situation be avoided? Most likely yes. Here are the common reasons why people fail choosing colors for their home.
• Customer did not purchase paint samples from the paint store and tested them on the walls prior to starting the painting project. Paint colors can look different from a printed swatch compared to an actual paint sample. (If you are not comfortable with doing the testing, you could agree with the painting company to apply paint samples for you. Some companies like Maxc Impressions LLC can do this, at no extra cost).
• Customer tested the color applying only one coat only, not two. It does make a difference.
• Customer text the color with a brush and not with a small roller which usually carry more paint and will get a closer result on the walls, as walls will be painted for the most part with a roller.
• Customer tested the color only on one wall or one space. Generalty, is recommended to test on multiple walls to make sure the color is what you like, when the natural lighting hits on various places.
• Customer tested the sample with a satin finish and chose a different finish for the project. Most paint samples at the store are made only in certain finishes most commonly satin and flat. If an eggshell or semigloss is chosen for the project and the color match was flat for example, there may be a minor difference in colors to be expected. Colors can go slightly darker or lighter based on the finish. Some people don’t mind but for some can be a big deal.
• Customer used colors they loved at the previous house, or at their friend’s house, but did not consider the ceiling colors and trim/doors colors, or even the floor, cabinets, or even furniture colors of the new house.
• Customer was overwhelmed with color options and simply chose what thought best. In these cases, it would be recommended to hire a paint consultant at your local store, or a local experienced interior designer which sometimes for just a reasonable fee, can possibly save you way more in extra charges for repainting your walls.
